People have children intentionally for the government support. I was walking to the store one day and over heard a conversation between two young lower class mothers. One who was pregnant tells the other something along the lines that her second kid will get her an extra "X" amount of money per month from the government. This was Jersey City NJ. Some what of a ghetto in parts.

“The problem here is, some of these countries are coming of age and they know that means burning a lot of cheap fossil fuels like coal and oil. They're in quite a tough situation. They understand that the fossil fuel leap will damage their environment, but without it they're going to have to rely on aide from developed nations so that they can leapfrog their 'coal age' and jump right into high tech solutions like tidal power, hydroelectric, solar, etc. Neither choice is something that they can really afford. It's a grim Catch 22.So the developed nations have to provide aide to these countries AND keep their own environmental promises if they want to make a significant impact. Its a tough pill to swallow for them.

@fasda: Big pharmaceutical companies probably did help fund this, it doesn't mean they were the ones who made the breakthrough. By that logic, I could put in five bucks to fund the LHC and then say I was directly responsible for discovering (or disproving, or neither) the Higgs Boson.@Larminarcissus: It was hard to tell whether you were making fun of Big Pharma or healthcare reform; but either way, it gave the impression that some massive pharmaceutical company came up with this on their own. People seem to think that pharmaceutical companies come up with all these medical breakthroughs; when (from the little news about such things I've seen, at least) much of the time they just commercialize the discoveries of the academic community.
